Pathology Services

The Pathologists at Stamford Hospital work closely with our Neurosurgeons, Radiation Oncologists, and Medical Oncologist to provide expert surgical pathology evaluation of brain tumors.

Expert Intraoperative Evaluation

We work closely with our Neurosurgeons, and routinely evaluate frozen section material and intraoperative touch preps on brain lesions. We are able to triage the tissue specimen in the best possible way to assure the best possible lesion work-up, including lymphoma, infections, metastatic carcinomas, and primary brain tumors.

Cutting Edge Tissue Processing

All tissue at Stamford Hospital is processed using the advanced tissue staining system (Symphony by Ventana Medical Systems). This tissue staining platform allows for the pathologist to better evaluate small biopsy material, especially brain tissue. We utilize immunohistochemistry for tumor classification, and have a wide antibody panel to thoroughly evaluate brain tumors.

Expert Surgical Pathology

Our pathologists are skilled in evaluating adult brain tumors. For difficult to classify tumors, we use the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN as our Reference Laboratory, which has expert neuropathologists, many of whom have international reputations for excellence in Neuropathology.
